There is a lonely chimney behind the Immaculate Conception Church at 13th Street and Garrison Avenue in Fort Smith Arkansas. This chimney has long stood at this location--first as the chimney belonging to a building that was associated with old Camp Belknap and then as a part of the Grotto of the grounds of St. Anne's Academy. A plaque explains that the chimney once belonged to the home of Zachary Taylor--the nineteenth-century president and hero of the Mexican War.

The third Arkansas Game and Fish Commission nature center was built on former Fort Chaffee land in Fort Smith next to Wells Lake a popular spot for fishing and picnics. It includes a gift shop classroom multipurpose room and a wildlife workshop. There is a wheelchair-accessible trail with wayside exhibit signs highlighting the environment and history of the lake and surrounding property. A 1200-gallon aquarium contains species relevant to the Arkansas River.

The Fort Smith National Historic Site preserves almost 80 years of history, starting from the establishment of the first Fort Smith on December 25, 1817, to the final days of Judge Isaac C. Parker jurisdiction over Indian Territory in 1896. Restored original late-1930s Ferris wheel from the Eli Bridge Company that was built and displayed at the 1935 San Diego World’s Fair centers this old-fashioned amusement park. Also includes a hand-painted Italian carousel a calliope circus wagon a 1957 Pullman dining car converted into the Frisco Diner a 1963 British Leyland double-decker that is now a concession stand and a Penny Arcade of retro arcade games.
