Made reservations months in advance for family reunion. Arrived on Friday for three-day stay and met at desk by Josh, a very friendly, helpful person who let me check out the room and made sure I was on the 2nd floor east side so no afternoon sun. He also gave me an extra set of towels as there were three of us.
Some family said they didn't want to stay here because of bad reviews. OLD reviews maybe. The fools! This is a very nicely laid out hotel with attention to soundproofing the rooms. I didn't hear any of the kids running down the hall to the large enclosed pool or anything. The room (two queens) was very clean with enough amenities (fridge, microwave, large flat-screen, USB/charging station, etc.) to make anyone happy. Wi-fi was adequate...actually pretty reasonable for surfing.
Bathroom: the only negative was the tub's drain cap was broken and I had to set it aside. As I work facilities for a large company, I see things others might miss. Caulking was getting old around the tub, but otherwise it was nicely appointed and very user-friendly, especially for a mobility challenged person.
Main room: carpet was clean...no dirt that I could see. Queen beds were comfortable yet just the right firmness (amen!). Lighting was adequate for our needs and drapery closed properly to block out the morning sun. Air-conditioning was a wall unit and not overly noisy. Though it was 90+ outside, we were able to keep it on "low cool" with adequate cooling (in part due to being on the east side so no afternoon sun.)
Hotel: the breakfast was well done! Each day something different, such as sausage/bacon, biscuits and gravy, or scrambled eggs/omelets. In addition, there was the normal individual milk (white/chocolate), cottage cheese, raspberry yogurt portions, fruit, cereals, pastries, muffins, and make-your-own waffles. Yes...probably more but I didn't eat it all so I didn't look that closely. The staff were on top of it throughout and one morning, when I noted coffee in one air-pot was out, the desk clerk took care of it himself rather than ask one of the ladies. I saw some good teamwork in that. Anyway, I greatly enjoyed the breakfast and anyone coming away hungry either has some major dietary concerns or just too picky!
Pool: didn't swim, but it was constantly in use. Our cousins that recommended this (and negotiated a reduce rate for the reunion) said they used the hotel for a big birthday party the year earlier and were very happy with the pool and hottub.
Lounge: Called the Iowa Room, it is also hosted by the Desk Clerk. Beer/wine only. My only complaint: too darn hot in there. I was sweating in there using the wi-fi and drinking my beer. The atmosphere is quiet with photos of old-time Iowa and famous Iowans (Donna Reed and such.) Nice place to relax...but come on...turn up the AC. It was cooler in the lobby than in there!!
Elevator: is there one? I'm not sure because I used the stairs at each entrance.
Business center: two pcs, printers, fax, etc. I didn't use it, but it looked like it would serve any road-warrior's needs.
Staff: again, I see them as a team that are very accomodating and responsive. Whether I asked house-keeping for a new bar of soap and traded towels to needing some information, they were always helpful and I observed them to always be communicating and working towards making this a pleasant stay for their customers.
Locale: Walmart and various places to eat are nearby. A Dollar General is within walking distance. Well manicured lawns/shrubbery with the highway far enough to be of no concern noise-wise to me at anytime. In addition, there is bus service in the local area. Not many trees, but this looks more like a new development. Give it time...
Summary: Very good time there with excellent staffing, accomodations, and amenities. Get the AC turned on in the Iowa Room and it'll be a GREAT time!

The staff really make this average value chain hotel into an exceptional hotel. I called to make reservations for 5 rooms on a very busy weekend in DSM, and the staff member was really helpful making sure the rooms were correct and had enough beds. Most of the hotels in Des Moines were booked for this particular weekend and I knew that Grimes wouldn't put us too far away from the action. The hotel was very clean, our bathroom had a bit of a musty smell but it wasn't too hard to get over that. They had a nice pool/hot tub area, it was clean but really hot in that room. The breakfast area was really nice and big and they had a nice selection of food. The hotel was pretty quiet no highway traffic noise and you couldn't hear other hotel guests. The 'bar' area was nice, you could buy beer/wine from the front desk person but we also brought in our own food/beer and they didn't say anything which was nice. The kid who helped us was really friendly and would make an effort to check in on us to see if we needed anything. It was a nice room for our group to just hangout without being poolside. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you're having a group visit the Des Moines area!

Like most Americinns, this one was very clean and well appointed, with a nice hot breakfast selection. But this is one of 4 in the country that has a little bar off the back of the lobby, which serves beer, wine, and pizza. What a treat after a long drive to be able to enjoy a glass of wine with friendly staff and other guests.
