The city of Brainerd is the gateway to the lakes area. Baxter's border city has many things to offer a visitor. You can enjoy so many activities like boating, fishing biking and golfing. Brainerd International Raceway hosts numerous racing events including the National Hot Rod Associations national drag racing tour. Just east of Brainerd you will find the Paul Bunyan Amusement center. Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox Babe have been residence of Brainerd since 1950. It's great for all ages. Explore the beautiful upper Mississippi river on a unique paddle wheel boat the Mississippi Belle. Catch a ride in the summer or fall. Within the city limits of Brainerd lies the Northland Arboretum. Five hundred acres of plants, wildlife, 12 miles of hiking trails and lighted cross-country ski trails. Brainerd offers a variety of restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities for everybody to enjoy.

Downtown Nisswa offers a variety of stores from antique shops to sporting equipment stores. In the summer Nisswa also offers Turtle Races every Wednesday and other fun activities for children of all ages. Nisswa is also connected to the 100 mile paved Paul Bunyan Trail that begins in the Brainerd area and runs all around the surrounding communities all the way to Bemidji. The north end of Gull Lake is located in Nisswa, and in January, the world's largest ice fishing contest is held on Gull Lake.
