The original Corn Palace called "The Corn Belt Exposition" was established in 1892. The South Dakota attraction serves as a multi-use center for the community and region. Mitchell is home to the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village, an archaeological site where scientists are excavating a Native American village, believed to be ancestors of the present Mandan residing in North Dakota. Explore the traditions of early American settlers� from railroading, farming, and ranching, to fur trade, hunting, and the rugged experiences of stagecoach travel at the Dakota Discovery Museum. Step back in time by touring the Beckwith House, just one of four historical buildings on the museum grounds. Don't miss the Mitchell Corn Palace! The World's Only Corn Palace is an outstanding structure which stands as a tribute to the agricultural heritage of South Dakota. Mitchell is home of Cabala's Retail Store where outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy museum quality animal displays and large aquarium exhibits.

Parkston provides retail, medical, professional, educational and recreational opportunities. Parkston has fertile farmland to help with the agricultural community as well the hunting season for pheasants, deer and other wildlife. Parkston also has a vibrant manufacturing sector as well.

Plankinton offers many community-oriented organizations which sponsoring year-round events and home to a local Historical Museum as well as 4-H Achievement Days and the County Fair. Area lakes include Twin Lakes, open to the general public for camping, swimming, fishing and boating, and Wilmarth Lake open to general public for fishing and boating.
