Welcome to the Nearby Cities of Eagle, Colorado

Edwards, Colorado

Located 18 miles from the AmericInn of Eagle and nestled in the Vail Valley just west of the famous ski and resort town of Vail, Edwards is the fastest growing community in Eagle County. Founded in the late 1800s, Edwards serves up many outdoor adventures. From fly-fishing with a guide, to floating down the Eagle River, to hiking through serene wilderness areas - it's all available around this mountain town.

In town, the Riverwalk offers a variety of inviting shops and eateries. From a lively brewery to the quintessential outdoor store, community establishments in Edwards are full of locals planning yet another Colorado adventure. There are also plenty of boutiques, art galleries and specialty shops right next door in the pedestrian-friendly Vail and Lionshead Villages. Continuing in Vail's upscale tradition, Edwards is also home to several bistros with excellent wine lists and a plush lodge and spa where visitors are treated to the finest in mountain pampering. There are also over a dozen golf courses near Edwards; at an elevation of 7,220 feet, your drives will go at least 10 percent farther than on sea-level courses.

Beaver Creek, Colorado

Beaver Creek is a posh community just a short 20 mile drive from the AmericInn of Eagle and known for its European flavor. As Vail's sister ski area, it has made a name for itself with over 1,100 acres of excellent, mostly intermediate terrain and an accessible resort village where heated walkways link shopping areas and lodging facilities. A sophisticated crowd runs here - the village includes a performing arts center, an outdoor ice rink and escalators transporting skiers to the chairlifts. The dining is exquisite. Numerous world-renowned chefs make Beaver Creek culinary experiences truly exceptional.

Beaver Creek offers a myriad of outdoor adventures for every season, including kayaking in Gore Creek, guided four-wheeling tours along lofty mining roads, or even dog sledding across snowy fields. Challenging and well-designed golf courses sit between Vail and Beaver Creek. Spas in the area are certainly worth the splurge.

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

32 miles from the AmericInn of Eagle and home to the worlds largest improved hot springs pool, this town revolves around water. You can swim, soak in one of the pools or ride a water slide at hot spring spas. You can even steam yourself in the adjacent Yampah Vapor Caves. The caves were prized by Ute Indians long before…Yampah is Ute for “big medicine.” It is said that when the first explorers encountered the springs in the 1860s, the Utes showed them how to use the water's healing powers to help an injured member of their party.

North of town is an old cemetery with some fascinating headstones - including gunslinger Doc Holliday's. He and many other famous folks spent time at a nearby Hotel Colorado, which is said to be haunted (and now offers ghost tours). It's one of two grand historic hotels in town, the other being the Hotel Denver by the railroad depot (Amtrak still rolls through there daily).

The Colorado River makes its way out of spectacular Glenwood Canyon and roars right through town. It's popular for rafting, but walking or biking alongside it is also a treat. If you're into challenges, seek out the steep but worth-it hike up the Hanging Lake trail. At the top, you'll see how the lake got its name. Visit the Glenwood Caverns and Fairy Cave, with a wide array of wonderful cave formations - from cave bacon and popcorn to the better-known stalactites and stalagmites. Die-hard adventurers can sign up for one of their spelunking tours for a subterranean experience.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is 75 miles from the AmericInn of Eagle. Aspen Mountain has an elevation of 11,212 feet. If you're looking for the postcard perfect images of the Colorado ski resorts you see in magazines, Aspen is your kind of town. And if you're looking for a mining camp that made a successful transition to a serious ski and outdoor enthusiast Mecca, Aspen's got you covered as well. There's something here for everyone, from challenging ski slopes to wine tasting and opera, from hot dog carts to haute cuisine.

Aspen is consistently rated one of the world's top ski areas by ski and travel publications, and many lodges here have ski slope access literally out the back door. Aspen offers slopes for just about every level of skier, but experts tend to gravitate here.

Summer and fall are also prime times to visit. The nearby Maroon Bells offer excellent hiking with breathtaking views; wildflowers go wild in the alpine meadows. Autumn brings a floorshow of golden aspens. If you love the outdoors, Aspen offers just about every option. With activities ranging from fly-fishing to llama trekking, you'll be able to see a side of Colorado only Aspen can offer.

Vail, Colorado

Vail is located 32 miles from our Eagle hotel. When people think skiing in Colorado, Vail is often the first town that comes to mind. Established less than 50 years ago, saying the small town has grown rapidly in popularity is quite an understatement. World-class skiing and a high celebrity quotient have put it on the map for many travelers. Located in the heart of the Vail Valley, in the Colorado Rockies, it's a town created by and for skiing. The Colorado Ski Museum in town honors the memory of those soldiers, who played a pivotal role in the war.

Luxurious condos, first-class ski resorts and cozy lodges surround a village sporting dozens of restaurants that indulge visitors. The town is home to a number of big annual events, including a food and wine festival, the World Alpine Ski Championships, a huge July 4th extravaganza, nationally-renowned summer music and dance festivals and a locally loved rubber ducky race.

Former president Gerald R. Ford made his home here much of the time. His philanthropy spawned the Ford Amphitheatre performing arts center and the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, a must-see. Also check out the Vail Nature Center for an all-natural attraction.

Wildlife once again abounds in the Vail Valley. In the 1800s, British adventurer Lord Gore ventured into the valley with mountain man Jim Bridger, hunting heavily and significantly reducing local animal populations. Today, the furry residents are back. Keep an eye out for deer and elk. At Vail Pass, visitors can find a handful of scenic and easily accessed lakes in the Holy Cross Wilderness Area. The hike up Mount of the Holy Cross is no easy task, but one of the most popular in the area.

As big as skiing is in winter, golf replaces it handily in summer. Be sure to check out the many local courses that fit almost any handicap.

Avon, Colorado

Located just 22 miles from the AmericInn of Eagle and nestled in the Eagle River Valley at the base of Beaver Creek Ski Resort, Avon sprang up in the midst of the ski area's development. Although this town numbered less than 1,500 people only 20 years ago, today Avon boasts over 6,000 full-time residents, and that number nearly doubles during peak tourist season.

Avon is often referred to as the commercial core of the Eagle River Valley. Named for the Avon River Valley in England, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, this town is home to Vail and Beaver Creek ski area employees and other residents who enjoy the breathtaking scenery and ample outdoor recreation in and around the two ski areas.

In town, Gore Creek provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking and rafting, and the Vail/Beaver Creek Activities Desk has an extensive list of recreational offerings. (See the Beaver Creek section for more resort information). The May Gallery at Avon's Vilar Center for the Arts hosts top exhibits every year, featuring everything from Native American art to glass works.
