Eldon Iowa
The AmericInn of Ottumwa is a mere 15 miles away from one of the most famous houses in America. Located outside the town of Eldon, Iowa, the American Gothic House still remains the same way it was when Grant Wood created his famous portrait. Celebrate Gothic Days every year in June and have your picture taken in front of the house. Visit the 100-year old McHaffey Opera House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, or take a tour of the newly restored Rock Island Railroad Depot.
Albia Iowa
Take a 30 minute drive to the former coal mining town of Albia, Iowa. This town boasts over 90 buildings on the National Historic Register, as well as an impressive number of restored Victorian houses and antique collections. Albia’s historic town square included the First Iowa State Bank, which has been restored to its original splendor and decorated with Victorian antiques. Take a tour of the Robert T. Bates apartment. One of the town’s main benefactors, his turn-of-the-century apartment has been left exactly as he left it and is filled with priceless antiques and collectibles from all over the world. Visit the Monroe County Historical Museum to see exhibits and artifacts from 19th century homes, businesses, and farms. The museum also features a coal mining exhibit that pays homage to the towns roots. In late summer, Restoration Days celebrate the towns’ history through dinner theaters and plays that the community takes part in, parades around the square, and craft and antique shows. In the winter, the annual Victorian Stroll takes the community back to the 19th century with live-action window displays, carriage rides around the square, and a Festival of Trees.
