Historic site

Completed in 1825 Fort Snelling was the hub of the Upper Mississippi area for over 30 years. During the Civil War Fort Snelling was a Union training center and during World War II processed and trained over 300000 US Army soldiers. Closed at the end of WWII the fort was named a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and has since been rebuilt and restored. Come take a guided tour enjoy a historic workshop or take advantage of the numerous walking trails and picnic areas.

Hayes Lake State Park consists of almost 3000 acres of forest with trails and the lake itself which supports crappie sunfish large mouth bass and northern. Birdwatchers have spotted over 200 species in or near the park. The summer is perfect to look for orchids gentians and blueberries or just for a picnic. Visitors also enjoy swimming and canoeing in the lake along with camping. Trails for hiking skiing snowmobiling and horseback riding connect with the Beltrami Island State Forest.

Established in 1891 Itasca is Minnesota’s oldest state park. Today the park totals more than 32000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Walk across the mighty Mississippi as it starts its winding journey 2552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Stand under towering pines at Preacher's Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann's Cabin landmarks of centuries gone by. Not only is Lake Superior the largest of the Great Lakes it also has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world. It contains almost 3000 cubic miles of water an amount that could fill all the other Great Lakes plus three additional Lake Eries. With an average depth approaching 500 feet Superior also is the coldest and deepest (1332 feet) of the Great Lakes. The lake stretches approximately 350 miles from west to east and 160 miles north to south with a shoreline almost 2800 miles long. Enjoy the Minnesota beaches take a drive around the Great Lakes Circle Tour or tour the lighthouses of Lake Superior.

The trail follows the route of the railroad that saved many lives in the historic Hinckley and Cloquet fires in the nineteenth century.
