Apple Valley has grown from 585 people in 1960 to its current population of 52,000. Apple Valley takes its name from one of the first residential developments which had apple trees planted in every yard. In the general election of 1968, the residents voted to incorporate the town of Lebanon as the Village of Apple Valley. The majority of Lebanon pioneers came to Minnesota by steamboat, landing in Red Wing, Hastings, or St. Paul. Apple Valley offered close proximity to markets for supplies and to sell their produce (Minneapolis and St. Paul).
