Nisswa, Minnesota
Located 10 minutes north of the Brainerd/Baxter area, downtown Nisswa offers a variety of stores from antique shops to sporting equipment stores. In the summer Nisswa also offers Turtle Races every Wednesday and other fun activities for children of all ages. Nisswa is also connected to the 100 mile paved Paul Bunyan Trail that begins in the Brainerd area and runs all around the surrounding communities all the way to Bemidji. The north end of Gull Lake is located in Nisswa, and in January, the world’s largest ice fishing contest is held on Gull Lake.
Crosby, Minnesota
Crosby is known to some the area as an antique store “mecca” but it’s variety of antique shops aren’t all it has to offer. The Crosby area also has a lot of wonderful opportunities for outdoor fun surrounding it as well. Crosby is known specifically for it’s deep, clear, man made mine pit lakes which offer excellent fishing and diving opportunities as well. The brand new Cuyuna Country State Recreational Area is located close to Crosby as well and offers bike trails winding along 25 miles of undeveloped shoreline on 15 mine-pit lakes and 6 natural lakes in the area.
Pequot Lakes, Minnesota
Located 20 miles to the north, Pequot Lakes offers many locally owned restaurants and shopping opportunities. Pequot Lakes is also located just a short distance from one of the area’s nicest recreational and fishing lakes, Pelican Lake. Pelican offers wonderful sand beaches and excellent fishing as well. One of Pequot Lakes’ biggest attractions is their Bean Hole Days celebration held in July.
Crosslake, Minnesota
Crosslake is 20 miles to the northeast of Brainerd. Crosslake offers a unique experience to it’s visitors with a new town square that offers a diverse shopping area. Crosslake is also conveniently located among the Whitefish Chain of Lakes which offers some of the best fishing that the area has to offer. Crosslake also offers outdoor concerts in the summer and has an old-fashioned candy store for the kids as well. Crosslake is quickly becoming one of the Lakes area’s favorite tourist destinations.
