Carlton is the gateway to the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior located just 20 miles to the south. There are endless activities in the Carlton area for the active outdoorsman. The AmericInn Carlton is close to the St. Louis River, Lake Superior, Moose Horn Lake and River, and Chub Lake. Active water sports include boating, fishing, swimming, rafting, water-skiing, para-sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and wake-boarding. We offer access to a wide variety of outdoor trails where our guests can hike, birding, biking, hunting, and golfing. The hotel is in a great location with Black Bear Casino a few moments away with access to the Otter Creek Event Center, Cobalt Night Club & Cabaret, and Black Bear Golf Course. Spirit Mountain Ski and Adventure Park is 15 miles north on I-35 and offers a wide array of activities to do year round. Downtown Duluth offers access to Canal Park and the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center just minutes from Spirit Mountain.

Jay Cooke State Park
Park trails link up to the Willard Munger State Trail at the north edge of the park; perfect for backpackers, bikers (both mountain and tour), hikers, horseback riders, and skiers. Check out the wildflowers in the spring, and the vivid colors in the fall. Walk on the swinging suspension bridge high above the raging St. Louis River.

The Willard Munger State Trail
A collection of multiple use trails between Hinckley and Duluth. It consists of interconnecting trails offering hiking, bicycling, in-line skating and snowmobiling. It highlights the picturesque scenery and rich history of East Central Minnesota. The trail follows the route of the railroad that saved many lives in the historic Hinckley and Cloquet fires in the nineteenth century.

Spirit Mountain Ski & Adventure Park

Moose Lake State Park and Geological Center
Rolling hills surrounded by fields, woods, ponds and fishing lakes make this park popular for hikers, anglers, canoeists, swimmers and campers. Quiet Echo Lake is ideal for catching bass, northerns and panfish. The Willard Munger Trail is located two miles west of the park. Things to do include camping, swimming, hiking, biking, canoeing, boating and the museum.

Canal Park and the Depot

Through a close Tribal and State partnership, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has a unique mission in providing education to the public. This unique collaboration offers all students, regardless of demographic background, the opportunity to learn in a comfortable and diverse environment. Founded in 1987, the College offers two-year associate degrees and certificates across a wide range of program areas, including Law Enforcement, Human Services, Nursing, Business, Clean Energy, Early Childhood Development, and Environmental Science. Through the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, the College’s liberal arts curriculum provides a solid undergraduate transfer education for approximately forty-percent of the college’s students each year.
