Known for its strong volununteer spirit, quality of life and a 25 ft. high Dala horse, the town of Mora is the largest city in Kanabec County with a population of just over 3,500. Platted in May of 1882 by Myron R. Kent in anticipation of the coming railroad, the new town received its name from homesteaders Israel Israelson who suggested the name of his hometown located in the province of Dalarna, Sweden. Today. Mora's Swedish heritage can be found throughout the community in examples of building decoration, monuments and events.
Area Attractions and Activities
Mora Vassaloppet Cross-Country Ski Race - Held on the second Sunday in February, it features four different races. Vassaloppet skiing is a world-wide event and encompasses not only Mora, Minnesota but the Vassaloppet in Sweden, Asahikawa, Japan and Chungchun, China. The Vassaloppet races have also created a student exchange that brings students together every year from each of the countries.
Kanabec History Center and Coin School - The History Center is situated on 37 acres along the Snake River with walking trails and picnic areas that are open to the public. During the summer months our outdoor exhibits include historic buildings, a potato industry exhibit, farm machinery and more. The History Center offers many exhibits, classes and much more through the year.
Kanabec County Fairgrounds - The fairgrounds comes
alives for five days in July during the Kanabec County Fair. Also
located on the fairgrounds are the Mora Civic Center, Mora Aquatic
Center and Lions Kids Kingdom Park. There is something going on all
year long.

Natural Resources - The Kanabec Area is rich with many lakes and rivers for water enthusiasts - the area lakes are; Knife, Ann, Fish, Bass, Lewis, Quamba, Lake Five, Full of Fish, Pomroy and Lake Mora. The Rivers are Snake, Knife, Groundhouse, Grindstone, Ann and Rice. The Kanabec Area also offers great hunting and hiking in Mille Lacs Wildlife Refuge, with the Mille Lacs recreational area in our backyard, Kanabec County is nature enthusiast's paradise.
