How did Sauk Centre get its name? The choosing of the town name "Sauk Centre" was done democratically.  The name was written on a slop of paper by each man in the company and a vote was taken then.  The suggestion selected was Sauk Centre submitted by Alexander Moore.  His reasoning for the choice was that the river was named "Sauk" and from the direction of the river, it seemed that roads would center there.  There was no explanation given for choosing the spelling of "Centre," most likely it was because that was the common spelling of the word in that time period.  There have been many inquiries made regarding the origin of the word "Sauk."  Some Sauk Centre citizens are under the impression that this area was once the home of the Sauk Indians, however, their tribal home was south and east of Minnesota.  At one time, there were occasional hunting parties of the Suk and Foxes that roamed the shores of the Upper Mississippi River after the Sioux had been driven west of it in the early 1700's.  They are remembered by such names as Sauk River and Sauk Rapids.  The Sauk River was backed up by a dam to form Sauk Lake, on which Sauk Centre is located.
