Duluth, Minnesota

Half-way between Silver Bay and Duluth is the City of Two Harbors. Two Harbors, a city of approximately 4,000 inhabitants, has a rich history in mining, fishing, lighthouses, shipping logging and trains. A manufacturer of backpacks, grapples, siding and logging equipment; Two Harbors enjoys a diverse business base and healthy economic community. Beaver Bay and Finland, Minnesota
Beaver Bay and Finland are two small towns in very close proximity to Silver Bay. Beaver Bay, with a current population of approximately 250 inhabitants, was the first established community on the Minnesota shore of Lake Superior. Beaver Bay has history of small farming, commercial fishing, trapping and logging. The discovery of iron ore in the Beaver Bay area led to the establishment of Silver Bay. Today, the roadway through Beaver Bay is dotted with quaint shops depicting local history and craftsmanship. Included are:

Finland, 11 northwest miles of Silver Bay, is located in the Baptism River Valley surrounded by the rugged Sawtooth Mountains. Finland was one of the last places in Minnesota to be settled. It is a gateway to the wilderness bordered by State Parks and National Forests rich with lakes and streams. Though settled by Finnish farmers in the 1930’s, today there are no farms in Finland. The local economy is based on timber, taconite and tourism.
Lutsen, Minnesota
Approximately 35 miles north of Silver Bay is the village of Lutsen, an all season recreational destiny. Lutsen Mountains with four mountains to ski is the largest ski resort in Minnesota and boasts the largest vertical drop in the Midwest. Aside from the downhill runs, there are accesses to cross-country ski trails from the resort. During the summer Lutsen Mountains are open to mountain bikers not to mention the thrills of the Alpine Slide from the summit of Eagle Mountain and the tram ride to Summit Chalet on Moose Mountain. During the autumn, the tram ride to the summit of Moose Mountain offers breathtaking views of Lake Superior and the dazzling fall foliage of the Sawtooth Mountains from a four-person gondola. The famous Superior Hiking Trail can also be accessed from Lutsen.
