Mineview in the Sky - On a 20-story overlook, "Mineview in the Sky" offers visitors a panoramic view of the Rouchleau group of mines, one of the area's deepest mines. The focus of the majestic view is the open pit mine, nearly three miles long, a half-mile wide and 450 feet deep at the southern edge of Virginia. The 200-foot observation complex offers visitors the same vantage point used by pit foremen to survey the entire mining operation more than 25 years ago. Stockpiles of lean ore can still be seen across the pit. Since 1893, 300 million gross tons of ore have been shipped from the mine. Ten mining companies were involved at the Rouchleau mine at one time or another. John D. Rockefeller acquired the property in the early 1900's and transferred its holding to his United States Steel Corporation, which continues today to hold an interest in a major portion of the mine. Near the observation complex a 240-ton 21-foot high mining truck named King of the Lode awaits visitors. Also on-site are a 45-ton rail car, a 100-ton production truck, children's playground, and a visitor information center, where visitors can learn about the mining history of the Iron Range and take home souvenirs, gifts and postcards.
