Area Attractions and Activities
Mielke Park and Cultural Arts Center- Mielke Park is home of the "Theatre in the Woods" and four nature trails for the study of wildlife and plants. A lovely wildflower garden blossoms during the spring and summer. A large parking area, restrooms, and beautiful surroundings are yours to visit. Relax and enjoy picnic lunches while looking over wildflowers and Mielke Pond, which is stocked with panfish. Many events are held at this park during the summer, a number of these an annual tradition. Plays are presented throughout the year and concerts are held on the grounds at various times. Mielke Park is for everyone in the family.

Shawano Area Ski Sharks- The Ski Sharks perform every Wednesday night from mid-June through mid-August at the Wolf River Beach behind the Shawano Medical Center. Many courageous stunts are performed, from helicopters to double crisscrosses under other jumpers on the ski-jumping team. The swivel skiers are the graceful acrobats you see turning and swerving along the river. And the pyramid, one of the most photographed and precise acts you will see on the water, is one of the Shawano Ski Shark’s specialties.
Shawano County Fair- Late August. The Shawano County Fair will entertain, educate and excite you with nightly entertainment in the grandstand, 4-H exhibits and food. Also you will see midway thrills, a tractor pull, demolition derby, pig wrestling, free grandstand entertainment, Polka bands, craft exhibits, stock car races and 4-H exhibits.

Keshena Falls- Visit Keshena Falls on Hwy 47/55 going toward Keshena. This is a gorgeous sight that has a rich history attached to it. In the past Sturgeon came up the Wolf River this far each spring to spawn, and many years ago the Menominee's would ride the falls in a canoe for a few coins from tourists. This was the area where the treaty of 1854 was signed by the U.S. government and Menominee Chiefs Osh-kosh and Ke-she-nah establishing the Menominee Reservation.
Wolf River Dells and Big Smokey Falls - This is a very scenic area of the Wolf River and is a must-see for anyone interested in beauty in its natural state. These waterfalls are located of Hwy 55 on the Menominee Reservation. There is a small picnic area available with concession stands and rafting available seasonally. Shawano Lake- Shawano Lake, the largest lake in the county, with 6063 acres of water, is available for all types of boating, sailing, or for those who want to pull several water skiers. The local marinas have rental boats and skis available for your enjoyment! Shawano Lake is also one of the top fishing lakes in the State of Wisconsin and features muskie, northern, walleye, crappie, perch, and rock bass.
Red River- The Red River near Gresham is enjoyed by kayakers, white water rafters and canoeists alike. The section of the Red River from the Gresham dam to Ziemer’s Falls, or Red River Landing, are popular spots.
Embarrass River - South Branch- The natural beauty of Shawano County and the water flowing gracefully down Embarrass River - South Branch are in themselves reasons to come here to paddle. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking. Either way it’s a good workout and an exciting adventure.
Lower Wolf River- Although it has a steady current and wild appearance, the lower Wolf lacks the rough water characteristics of its upper stretches. Public landings are located in Shawano, Shioton and New London. A trip down the lower Wolf can be continued to Lake Winnebago. The river is well-known for spring walleye and white bass fishing. The Wolf is also known for its whitewater rafting.
Loon Lake- This lake Specializes in northern pike, large-mouth bass and bluegill. walleye, crappie and small mouth bass. This Is a great lake for beginners and the kids will love It. Its also a great ice fishing lake for large numbers of northern.

Museums and Galleries
Heritage Park Museum- This museum brings to life the history of the immigrants, lumberjacks and early farmers who settled this area of Wisconsin. It includes a variety of buildings and displays including a schoolhouse, a cheese exhibit building, a natural limestone building, and a Reception building full of local history. The tour guides are dressed in period costumes. You will journey back in history when you visit the John Kast house, built in 1871, and furnished with authentic 19th century furnishings. There is a variety of displays including ancient Native American bead-work. Remember to stop at the restored pioneer log cabin, where you can watch an old-fashioned cheese making demonstration.

Menominee Logging Camp Museum - This museum is home to the largest collection of logging artifacts in the world. You can tour a bunkhouse, cook shanty, old-time camp office, wood butchers shop, saw filers shack, blacksmith's shop and a scoop cedar roof shed. All the buildings are fully furnished with the tools and equipment used in the lumber camps of Northern Wisconsin. This site truly captures the feeling of the time period. There is an admission charged to view this museum.

Arvid E. Miller Memorial Library Museum- Established in 1974, this historical Library/Museum is the official depository for the public records of the Mohican Nation, Stockbridge-Munsee Band. Their primary goal is to preserve the Mohican history and culture for tribal members and the general public. A research library consists of written materials, such as books, manuscripts, correspondence, handwritten letters, notes, maps, microfilm, microfiche, scrapbooks, photographs, video tapes, language tapes, and much more. Among the many interesting items here are tribal documents, bead-work, items from the fur traders and many other unique things. One item in particular is a very large Bible given to the Mohicans by a chaplain of the Prince of Wales. There is a gift shop located in the museum where Indian crafts are sold. View rare displays of birch bark baskets, arrowheads, and war items.

Nature Trails/Hiking and Biking
Mountain Bay State Trail- With 83.4 miles of off road cycling, the Mountain Bay Trail is made from the former railroad corridor which stretches from Green Bay to Wausau. The Shawano Country portion contains 51 miles which extends from the Village of Pulaski to the Village of Eland, and is designed for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. During the winter months the trail is used for snowmobiling and ATV use.

Navarino Wildlife Area- This beautiful 12 mile wildlife area is open for exploration, snow sports, biking and hiking, and relaxation. It’s located on the 15,000 acre Navarino Wildlife Area. There are 12 miles of trails, easily accessible from the nature center, providing access to a variety of habitats. The Nature Center is equipped with a picnic area, picnic shelter, amphitheater, rustic restrooms; pump well, parking lot, cabin and an all-season handicap accessible building. There are programs, activities and recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Covered by forests and interspersed with wetlands and grasslands, the Navarino Wildlife Area provides a home for its many inhabitants including swans, sandhill cranes, ducks, deer, owls and many other woodland creatures. While separate from the Wildlife Area, the Navarino Nature Center operates within the wildlife grounds. The center offers seasonal seminars, self-guided walking tours, and trails for hiking, biking and cross county skiing.
