The Knoxville Raceway hosts the Sprint Car National Championships held here each August. If you plan on passing through Pella make sure to pack your wooden clogs! This heavily Dutch-inspired town is full of unique attractions including America’s tallest working Dutch Windmill. Measuring 135 feet from top to bottom this Dutch windmill is a giant attraction! Take a tour of the windmill and visit other nearby sightseeing spots such as Dutch Town and the Dutch Tulip Time Parade.

The 14-mile Volksweg Trail is a continually developing asphalt path. Currently the trail connects Pella from the Pella Public Library trailhead to the Howell Station Campground. From there the trail follows the Des Moines River and winds through the North Overlook woods. The trail continues along the north side of the lake to the Fifield Recreation Area. The trail passes through mature timbered areas restored prairies pine plantations open areas and offers fantastic views of Lake Red Rock. Benches for resting are available along the way.

Knoxville is the county seat for Marion County. It is home of the Marion County Courthouse that was built in 1896 and listed on the National Register for Historic Places. Knoxville is the birthplace of the Iowa Flag, the original design for the flag is on display in the rotunda of the Courthouse. Knoxville is also home to the Maryville Covered Bridge, an 1891 wooden covered bridge that features crisscrossed planks on the sides called “town lattice truss”, and the Bessie Spaur Butterfly Garden. Knoxville is best known for being the Sprint Car Capital of the World. They host Sprint Car races every Saturday night from April to September. The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum is located near the raceway and features rotating exhibits to highlight the history of both winged and non-winged Sprint Cars.
