Clean and comfortable enough. Location was very convenient for the wedding we attended. Terribly overpriced but there really isn't much around there anyway. Besides every room looks the same with your eyes closed!
The staff was very friendly and helpful with any information about the area, the room was clean and comfortable, but did not have a Micro or Fridge and we didn't always get bath towels sometimes we just got extra hand towels. I thought the price was rather high for this hotel...

I thought the price was rather high for this hotel . After shopping around various sites I realized they really UP the prices during the summer months and take advantage of the many tourist. I will admit this is a very beautiful area with many shops and eateries, bars and craft stores on the banks of Lake Michigan. The area itself is very romantic and also very family friendly ,keep in mind its very crowded during the summer months, and during the fall for apple picking ,wine tasting and fall color! Breakfast was included and descent, your typical items waffles cereals eggs bagels toast juice coffee etc.

When on vacation, we consider several factors in choosing a hotel, then rating it afterwards. Reviews by others are very important, and we do our homework. Also considered are location, price, breakfast, communication. Comfort, lighting, bathroom space, water pressure...all things that make a stay or can ruin it. We try and get hotels that have character or a feel for where we are, for the type of trip we are on. In other words, when in Prague, we don't want the Hilton. Exceptions are when we need a place to just sleep while passing thru an area.
This was a different kind of trip. I traveled from Ca. to Oh. to spend a month with the folks and do a short road trip. Dad has Alzheimers and this was a quality month for us.
I spent late nights while in Oh. trying to research hotels on the MI. west coast on an iPhone with no internet. Tough. Money, beds, breakfast, sink/shower/toilet layout...I decided on the Douglas/Sagatuck area over Holland (hotel aside I am very glad I did, loved this area) and choose this hotel over another in Holland for the sole reason that this hotel had breakfast which would save us time and money in the long run.
Breakfast: What can I say that the others haven't? It was really bad. prepared, sweet. shortage, bumping into each other trying to get what we needed because of the tight layout and no place to walk, as well as the fact that the plates were here, spoons there, knives elsewhere, hot foods (ha) were between the breads and toaster....no sense of it all. One morning we waited 30 min while someone went to the store for milk they put in a pitcher. other mornings it was in little pints. My biggest issue is that there is no place to sit. Every morning I went down about 7am and sat in the lobby while my folks had privacy to get ready in the room. (I used the lobby bathroom after a night shower). I watched for almost 2 hours as customers came and went. surges but always a seating issue. There is a huge meeting room back by the pool that is empty. Why not make that the breakfast area?????
About the room. I don't recall what I paid. I reserved a QQ with a separate sink area requesting the bottom floor for the folks and because it would be easier to get ready without the sink inside the toilet/shower area. When we arrived there was only a handicapped fireplace room available downstairs (It seems everyone requests down even if it isn't needed, with no elevator but the stairs are fine) for more so we took it. Disaster. The roll in shower stall flooded the entire floor making it deadly. Lots of mopping up with our towels. There was little room in the shower with the bars and fold down seat and curtain. The entire room was not accessible in reality. Due to the danger of falling and flooding I went back the next morning and asked for another room. The only room was an upstairs QQ fireplace which we took in spite of the difficulty of the stairs for the folks. We were glad we did as it was much more roomy even in the bath. It Had a sink in the shower area as well as in the room area. We were much more comfortable the next nights. The staff did refund me the difference I paid for the original fireplace/handicapped upgrade to my original reservation price. We were glad for a mw and fridge as well.
We did use the pool area. Jacuzzi was HOT, but we were glad to have access. I was VERY impressed that it had a remote lift for wheelchair folks into the pool, NICE.
The area was nice, just off the freeway and easy drive into the main area. It was also quiet, almost remote. nice location for satellite travel.
The staff was very nice and accommodating each time I stopped by. I had to ask 4 times for extra towels. I was told repeatedly that with a QQ there should be 4 sets, but there were only 2, even the next day they didn't give us more than 2.
They really bent over backwards to make us happy and were very sweet.. They sent us to The Butler for our first meal on the water, which I reviewed.
The second room was much more comfortable. No complaints. Lighting, water pressure, comfortable, pretty view. No regrets. Just don't use the handicapped room unless you have to and are VERY wheelchair bound.

We stayed at this hotel and it was ok for the price. With as many people that are more 'gluten sensitive' or Gluten allergic, as well as a bit more healthy conscious, we were not pleased that mostly were sugar or wheat based carbs. The apples were the only fruit offered, and were very brown inside. Not able to eat. The front desk staff is pleasant, these are very 'average' rooms. Nothing to write home about. The THOUGHT is nice about breakfast, but if you have any desire to eat anything healthy...don't count on this hotel. Pool looked nice, even though we didn't use it, and it is fairly clean. I suppose all of this area can change high prices for the value since it is high tourist time.

We traveled as a couple age 58 & 62 arriving on Tuesday July 13TH for two nights after modifying our original reservation. The building is gray not the traditional "wood look" from other AmericInn's we have stayed at however clean and well maintained. It is located about a 1/4 off the interstate and the exit is easy to miss. The building is well secluded with trees all around it. The lobby is grand with light oak, a large stone fire place and nice breakfast area to the left. We booked a King and received a Queen at $215.00 a night so not a good start. After spending the afternoon in Saugatuck we returned to find that there was a cancelation and we moved into #206 a king room. Note: This room says its handicap accessible from the outside (small box on the wall by the door), however it is not. NO bars and a standard tub/shower. The rooms are a bit of a let down - maroon and white walls, dark dated maghony furnishings. There was an amore, a desk & chair, an additional regular chair, a very old dated upholstered chair in a ugly shade of plum. The carpet also dated is a ugly green plaid, with matching green curtains and a green light spread on the bed. The bed was comfortable - I loved the pillows, my fiancé didn't. We had only one plastic glass, 2 shampoos - no conditioner (these are cheep grade small one time use things so if your hair is long bring your own). The carpet had not been vacuumed (chips by the bed) both nights we were there and on the second night we realized the plastic bag and melted ice were still in the bucket from the previous guests several days ago. Breakfast - not even worth talking about really. The waffle maker was broke, 2 toasters - no toast but a few different variety's of bagels. Trix yogurt and 3 different dry kid cereals, milk from a pitcher (which I would not use), sausage patties (pretty good), small round eggs (I thought they were mini pancakes) cold and terrible. A few different Hostess type small donuts and pastries, coffee and OJ. Not appealing at all. The pool and hot tub looked very nice but we didn't use them. Over all we would probably stay here again if the rate was 1/2 of what we paid and the breakfast is taken up a few notches. We feel its the little things that matter and this place fell way short for what they charge.
