Rockford was originally platted as Laphamville, Michigan by it's original settlers but when the Grand Rapid and Indiana Railroad Company began pushing Northward they advised it's residents to pick a shorter name. In 1865 new residents from Rockford, Illinois proposed and narrowly passed the name change to Rockford, Michigan. Known as the bedroom community of Grand Rapids, Rockford has many wonderful small shops and restaurants. The White Pine Trail runs through Rockford's downtown along the rogue River and the Rockford Dam.
