Established following discovery of rich Panhandle Oil Field in 1926. In months, a boomtown of tents and shacks sprang up, and the population numbered more than 40,000. Orderly growth soon replaced the ribald oil boom days and now Borger is a center for oil, chemicals and cattle. Tanks and towers of oil and petrochemical plants dominate the skyline. Home of Frank Phillips College. Annual events include Adobe Walls Trek in June and Juried Quilt Show in July. Visit Hutchinson County Historical Museum with exhibits depicting Hutchinson County area from time of Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez do Coronado to boomtown days. Enjoy one of 16 parks offering extensive picnic facilities, tennis courts, sports fields, playground equipment, swimming pools, and two 18-hole golf courses. Or take a scenic drive on a 25-mile loop located west and north to Stinnett crossing rough, canyon-cut landscapes of the Canadian river.

The post office established when the area became thickly settled by five families living in ndugouts within a two-mile radius. The town became the seat of Wheeler County in 1906. Today Wheeler serves as a regional, educational, medical, commercial and agricultural center for the county. Extensive cattle feedlot operations are in Wheeler. Be sure to visit the Mobeetie Jail Museum while you're in the area. The museum is housed in a restored jail; early-day sheriff's quarters authentically furnished. Displays of historical items from Wheeler County and antiques are displayed.
